The term “family law” encompasses many different areas, such as:
- marriage-related matters: prenuptial agreements, family trusts and estate planning, and terminations of marriage through dissolution or divorce.
- parenthood-related matters: establishment of paternity, contracts for in-vitro fertilization, child custody issues, establishment or modification of child support
- juvenile matters: representation of children; representation of families or juveniles in cases of alleged abuse, neglect or criminal activity.
An attorney must look at not only the legal issues, but also at the emotional issues and the long-term impact of the legal measures contemplated. In a family law context -- more than perhaps any other area of law -- emotions will impact the process. It is our job not only to see our clients through the legal processes, but also to ensure that our clients understand every aspect of those processes. We want our clients to make informed, rational decisions, even when (and especially when) it is difficult to do so. Where it is possible to come to an agreement, it should be structured so as to be fair and lasting.
In an initial meeting we will discuss the legal aspects of the client’s situation, review expectations, and explain the realistic possibilities. |
